Foodbuy Update: U.S. Tariffs & Our Commitment to you
With the recent announcement of proposed new U.S. tariffs on goods imported into Canada, we want to assure you that Foodbuy is actively monitoring the situation and taking proactive steps to mitigate potential impacts. While these tariffs were initially set to take effect on February 4, 2025, the implementation date has been extended to March 1, 2025.
We recognize that this is a fast-moving and evolving landscape. Our team is working closely with our trusted supplier partners to assess potential impacts, ensuring you have the most up-to-date information. Our priority is to provide transparent, timely updates and strategic solutions to help manage costs and maintain stability.
We remain committed to supporting you through these changes and will continue to keep you informed as new developments unfold.
What You Need to Know:
- Pricing Impact & Oversight – Tariffs do not always translate to direct price increases, as they may only apply to specific components of a finished product. Our comprehensive supplier contracts and price change process remains in place. Any supplier requesting a price increase must provide full documentation to justify adjustments.
- Timing of Potential Price Changes – Produce, such as fruits and vegetables, will see quicker price impacts. Non-perishable items may take up to three months or longer to reflect changes once tariffs are implemented.
- Supply Chain Considerations – No immediate supply disruptions are expected.
- Categories at the greatest potential risk – These categories include fresh fruits and vegetables, grocery, bakery, beverages and select chemicals.
- Leveraging Canadian Sourcing – Foodbuy maintains strong partnerships with many Canadian suppliers and producers and continues to offer locally-sourced and produced products. However, supply chains are complex, and some Canadian products may still contain U.S. components. If the need arises, we may suggest solutions to help mitigate the impact from tariffs.
- Evaluation of Alternative Sourcing Options is an on-going activity within our sourcing and category teams and we will communicate any additional program details as they become available.
- Ongoing Communication – Any price changes will be communicated as usual through the Foodbuy Advantage eNewsletter in the Price Watch section. Sign up here to receive the Advantage if you don’t currently receive it.
We appreciate your trust and partnership. We are committed to keeping you informed and providing strategic solutions to help you navigate these uncertain times. As new information becomes available, we will continue to share timely updates. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your Foodbuy account manager— we’re here to support you.
